Campaign for National Drug Coverage: New Years Update

Posted on

We’ve endorsed the Campaign for National Drug Coverage who sent out this New Years message:

Happy New Year!

We embarked on an important campaign together in 2015. And, thanks to your support, the Campaign for National Drug Coverage achieved some remarkable milestones, such as:

  • Our campaign received endorsements from 90+ community and health care organizations.
  • Nineteen municipalities across Canada — representing nearly 6 million Canadians — approved motions urging the federal government to create a national pharmacare strategy.
  • At the July 2015 Summer Meeting of Canada’s Premiers in St. John’s, NL, premiers Kathleen Wynne (Ontario), Paul Davis (Newfoundland and Labrador), and Greg Selinger (Manitoba) added their names to a giant prescription form, recommending federal leaders a healthy dose of pharmacare.
  • Pharmacare was one of the most talked-about proposals in the 2015 federal election with two of the four federal political parties including proposals for a national drug coverage plan in their health care platform.

The election of a new federal government restored optimism for many Canadians. The Honourable Jane Philpott, our new federal Minister of Health, agrees that a public, affordable and safe national drug care program would mean that everyone in Canada would have access to the prescription medicines they need. She has committed to working to reduce drug costs for Canadians, but it’s not clear if universal pharmacare is on the agenda for the new government.

Our work is not finished.

Canada’s provincial and territorial health ministers are meeting with Minister Philpott on January 20 and 21 in Vancouver with an objective to negotiate a new national health accord. A national drug coverage plan would mean that everyone in Canada would have access to the prescription medicines they need.

Tell your health minister that Canadians need a public, affordable and safe national drug coverage plan, now.

You can email federal Minister Philpott here, and provincial Minister Lake here.

The Campaign for National Drug Coverage will continue our advocacy work, such as our municipal campaign, throughout the year. Thank you for supporting the Campaign for National Drug Coverage. We look forward to working with you in 2016.
