As part of its international humanitarian commitment, Canada sponsors Government Assisted Refugees (GAR) that are in urgent need of protection. These refugees are referred by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees based on Canadian targets and criteria, and are selected abroad for resettlement.
Astoundingly, Canada is the only country worldwide that issues interest bearing loans to these refugees to cover their pre-entry medical examination and transportation costs to resettle in the country.
In response, the Surrey Poverty Reduction Coalition and the City of Surrey have launched a petition to ask the federal government to terminate this shameful practice. Please click here to learn more and to sign the petition.
