Thanks to the collaboration of BC Poverty Reduction Coalition members and five close partners, Dr. Gary Bloch, a family physician with St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, and chair of the Ontario College of Family Physicians’ Committee on Poverty and Health, shared his ideas about health and poverty with people across BC on a brief tour of Metro Vancouver and through a Province-wide webinar, September 22-23, 2014.
Dr. Bloch’s speaking tour of BC was the first of our Poverty Free BC Speaker Series. Dr. Bloch’s simple cure for the health problems ailing low-income British Columbians -to increase their income- was a message heard far and wide: articles were published by Business in Vancouver and 24 Hours, interviews aired on CBC’s Early Edition and CKNW, and presentations were scheduled at the Union of BC Municipalities, Reach Community Health Centre’s AGM, and Vancouver Coastal Health.
Our keynote event, a free public talk at Simon Fraser University’s Harbour Centre, was booked solid just days after being announced, and the session at Carnegie Community Centre had powerful testimony from community members living the reality that Dr. Bloch faces everyday in his role as a physician.
The Poverty Free BC Speaker Series will continue bringing exciting and engaging speakers to BC. If you were part of any of the events of Dr. Bloch’s tour, please take a moment to tell us your thoughts here.
