Donating isn’t a long-term solution for poverty and hunger, by Trish Garner

On January 9, 2014, Vancouver local newspaper The Georgia Straight published an article by Trish Garner, organizer at the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition (BCPRC). In this article, titled Donating isn’t a long-term solution for poverty and hunger, Trish argued that charity is not the solution to poverty in BC.

“Don’t get me wrong; giving to charity is necessary in this time of great need in order to address the immediate needs of people living in poverty. However, charities can only provide short-term relief that addresses the “downstream” symptoms, and we need long-term solutions that go “upstream” to fix the root causes”, she explained.
