The holiday season is fast approaching, and as we get closer, more and more people start thinking of giving a helping hand. Everyone feels compassionate towards children living in poverty, people needing a bed to sleep in, or families not having the chance to enjoy a warm meal together, and act on this by giving to charity. In fact, BC is one of the most generous provinces in Canada in terms of how much we give to charity. Yet, BC has had the highest poverty rate for the last 13 years.
It is clearly time for a different approach, so at the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition we are inviting you to take part in a “holiday intervention” to shift people’s thinking from charity to include justice. We created this simple activity called “How to Make Your Food Bank Drive Better: Add Upstream Action” so that you can do just that. It provides easy step-by-step instructions for you and your family to engage in a fun, democratic exercise that can strengthen your school’s or work’s food bank drive this year.
Please get in touch if there is anything we can do to support you in running this activity. Also, please make sure to send us any updates or photos of how it went for you!
