As reported by First Call: Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition, our provincial Representative for Children and Youth is taking the government to court. The case comes in response to the recent introduction of Bill 24-2006 designed to limit the Representative’s access to cabinet documents — documents critical to her role of auditing how well the government is doing in meeting its mandate toward the children and youth in BC. The Representative provided the following statement to the media:
I have applied to the Court for an order to compel Government compliance with their obligations under the Representative for Children and Youth Act. I remain open to discussions to resolve the issue, but have exhausted all other options to get the material necessary to complete an audit and review of a vital program that impacts close to 5,000 children and youth in BC.
