Greetings signatories to the BC Poverty Reduction Open Letter,

This past weekend (February 28 – March 1, 2009) was declared “Poverty Reduction Weekend” in Victoria by its city council. Two public events took place to mark the occasion: a talk featuring Seth Klein (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives) was hosted by the City of Victoria, Quality of Life CHALLENGE and Together Against Poverty Society (TAPS); and an afternoon celebration took place, marking TAPS’ 20th anniversary.

To keep building the call for a BC poverty reduction plan, encourage your friends, family, neighbours, and co-workers to sign the Open Letter as individual endorsers. Individuals can sign on at the following link on the BC Poverty Reduction site:

A great resource is now available on the BC Poverty Reduction website: you can download a powerful, narrated presentation about the need for a poverty reduction plan in BC. This presentation is particularly useful if you want to organize your own event calling for a BC poverty reduction plan. You can view the presentation at this link:

And don’t forget – now that you’ve joined the call for all parties to commit to a poverty reduction plan for BC, make sure you let your local candidates know. Contact your MLA candidates, tell them you’ve signed the Open Letter, and make sure they know that you want to vote for someone prepared to commit to legislated targets and timelines to reduce poverty in BC. The BC Poverty Reduction website ( includes a link to lists of candidates in the upcoming provincial election.

Keep us posted about your activities for this call!

Best regards,
BC Poverty Reduction Committee
